The Voyage Begins

On Saturday, June 28th, we said goodbye to our berth at LaSalle Park Marina and caught the 10:30 bridge opening from Burlington Bay into Lake Ontario. Ann and Daryl, on their boat Galadriel, came through on the same bridge. We missed saying goodbye to a lot of people and it was sad leaving. Hopefully we can stay in touch by this web page and during our visits back to Burlington. Ann got some great shots of Vagus going through the bridge for the web page. It was hectic getting everything together to leave on the 28th but we managed although the boat job bin is full and we still have to get the Ham system going - something we hope to accomplish in July.

We actually got up at 6:20am the first morning to figure out how we were going to lift and stow the dinghy on the deck - something we had not tried though we knew theoretically the dinghy should fit. Normally we are late-leaving cruisers so this was an accomplishment. Everything worked out and Daryl and Ann, when they arrived much later, were surprised to see that we were not only awake, but ready to go.

We had a nice downwind sail to Toronto, then motored in dying winds to Highland Yacht Club. We were starting, very slowly to realize that we had left. We had a layover day at Highland, got some boat jobs done, Daryl and Ann had another "coffee making incident" (another Daryl story!), and I lost at Dominos (a rare event). Monday we left for Whitby and had a great sail all the way (after getting the reefing lines sorted out on the main - another job off the list). Tuesday we motored to Cobourg for Canada Day. We met Bob & Sue (friends who now live in Cobourg) and watched the fireworks off Vagus. Wednesday, we celebrated Bob's birthday and had great time and dinner. Then we were off to the Murray Canal, again a motor. We stayed at the East end on the canal and BBQ'd. It was really hot so Ann and Karen had a brief swim off the boat - refusing to look too closely for fish eggs or algae. This is a great place to overnight except the mosquito's found a weakness in our defense system. We were up at 12:30 plugging the gaps and conducting mosquito search and destroy missions. Friday we motored and sailed up to Belleville and wandered the town with Daryl and Ann on Saturday.
