Time to move?
Sunday turned out nice and on wandering the docks we met Destiny Calls
- a CS27 who did a similar trip a few years ago and has a fun web site
about it. We were really impressed when they mentioned loading 26
cases of beer on a CS27 before leaving Florida for the Bahamas
(where the beer is expensive). How, you might ask could a CS27,
which is 27feet long, hold 27 cases of beer? We now know. It was
great fun talking to them about their adventures.
Later we decided to go on a dinghy adventure. One nice thing with
our new dinghy and motor is that it planes quite easily and allows
us to travel at un-sailboat like speeds (i.e. gets us somewhere
quickly) and venture into not-sailboat friendly water depths. On
this adventure, we went off to the Black Creek Cheese Factory which
is a few miles from the marina and up a creek in which the water
colour changes to - guess what - black! Our arrival was at the same
time as a vintage car rally showing up. All the cars were pre 1916
and really well restored. Many of the drivers and passengers were in
vintage costumes. Of course we had forgotton our camera. We were
able to pick up some 4 year old cheddar (which is excellent) and the
makings for dinner - a very worthwhile trip.
Tuesday saw us heading off for Cobourg to get ready for the next
part of our adventure. The winds were predicted to be light to
moderate in a favourable direction - well not quite. We did a little
motoring, then sailing, then motoring and got into Cobourg about
9:30 in the evening. This was a 14 hour trip for us which is on the
long side for a day. It is interesting talking to power boaters
about distances and times. To us the Lake is big as it takes a long
time to go from one spot to another, to a powerboater it is small as
this trip would have been 3 to 4 hours.
We planned to use Cobourg as our base for going South. Not only does
it have a great downtown within shopping distance, but also we have
great friends there to visit. We took a weekly rate to do all those
necessary things like laundry, grocery shopping and seeing our kids
Alex, Jeff and Caitilin on the weekend. Our friends Bob and Sue
cooked us a gourmet dinner on Thursday - their place is the best
restaurant in Cobourg - and were great hosts helping us with the
provisioning and letting us use their computer.
I managed to get the weatherfax through the Ham radio going,
although our little barometer which predicts the weather seems to be
more accurate than the weatherman. Who wants to know about more
rain and chance of thunderstorms on the way anyway? (we have had a
rainy summer in contrast to BC).
On Saturday, Alex, Jeff and Caitilin arrived for a visit and sleep
over. We had a great time catching up on news, celebrating Jeff's
birthday and finding out we could all sleep on the boat - the
parents snoring was apparently tolerable. This is important as we
hope to have similar visits in warmer climates. The weather was not
the best but we managed quite well and even the cooking worked out
well for that many people (of course we did go out for dinner on
Saturday).
